My Review

As always with Max Monroe, the hilarious and outrageous happen when two thirtysomething adults have to take care of their parents after an "accident."  Ryan is a stereotypical workaholic who leaves NYC to take care of his dad, and Carly is a free-spirited business owner from Colorado. The two first encounter each other when Carly steals Ryan's cab. He's of course waiting in line, and she runs up and grabs it. He sees her again in his father's neighborhood when she's struggling to take out the trash can. 

The two continue to be thrown together, thanks to the antics of their wild parents, Stella and Sal. Just as the two of them are getting close, Stella and Sal announce they're getting married. 

The hilarity of Carly thinking that she's going to marry her step-brother, the elder side-characters and antics that are involved in the senior community, make this a different Max Monroe story, but one that includes their signature comedic romance trope.

My Review

Cletus and Jennifer and all the Winston family are together for their big engagement party. The happy couple gets caught up in the murder of Jen's father, and while they were hiding from the gunman, Cletus sees that it's Jennifer's mom who is washing blood off her hands. 

What comes next is a series of investigations, a surprise, a confirmation, and finally, weddings. It's a good story and one that kept me intrigued as the prior interactions between Jennifer, her parents, and the people who her dad scammed are all involved in this tale. I really enjoyed catching up with all the family, and loved the ending with Ashley and Drew.

While this one can technically be read as a stand-alone, I wouldn't miss the first one, and the entire Winston brother's series.

Excerpt

“Here.” Cletus suddenly appeared, looking devilishly handsome in the dim light and seemingly all put back together—like we’d been in here holding hands instead of. . . ANYWAY.

He held out my underwear. His eyes were bright even in shadow, and I could see they were half-lidded as they lazily trailed over me. He looked at me like he was hungry, and I was dinner. Despite all the encore orgasms I’d just had, the effect hit me right between my legs. 

I wondered what he was thinking, watching as he licked his bottom lip and drew it into his mouth. Was he just as insatiable for me? And if so, was he okay with that?

Tearing my eyes away, I pulled on the lace and fixed my skirt, telling my body to settle down. We were getting married for hootenanny’s sake! 

Cletus cocked his head to the side while I smoothed my hands down the red fabric, working to get a hold of all this raging want always coursing through my veins whenever he was near. Maybe it was because he was my first, and I guess, my only. Was that why I felt so crazed for him all the time? 

“Miraculous,” he said.

I surmised he meant the dress. “Right? The wrinkles are hidden, if there are any. It’s ’cause they ruched the outer fabric at the seams, see?” I turned to the side to show him the seam, and he stepped forward as though he were going to investigate.

Instead, his hands cupped my face and tilted my chin back. He stared at me with a vibrant intensity I felt all the way to my fingertips. “No, Jenn. Not the dress. You.” Cletus gave me a soft kiss, ending it by gently nipping my bottom lip. “You are my miracle.”

I sighed. And I smiled. And I felt like I was walking on a cloud instead of in four-inch heels, which was also probably something of a miracle. “You say the sweetest things.”

“I think you mean, I say the truest things.”

 I laughed, and he kissed my forehead. He held me there, in the dark with his lips pressed to my forehead. “I love you so completely, with every cell in my body. I wonder sometimes if I’d cease to exist—just evaporate or disappear—if anything ever happened to you.”

“No.” I anchored my hands to his wrists and squeezed. “Don’t think like that. We’ve got our whole lives in front of us. There’s nothing anyone can—”

Three bangs in quick succession pierced the quiet moment, and not a second later Cletus had me on the ground beneath him, covering my back with his body.

“Gunshots,” he whispered in my ear. “From the parking lot. Don’t move.”

My Review

It's no surprise that I am a Kristen Ashley fan. Back from the early days of Rock Chick series, I would barrel through her novels. This one was no different, and focused on Jagger Black, the son of slain Chaos brother Black. While Jagger is visiting his father's grave site, he sees another family laying someone to rest. He locks eyes with the girl, sees a brother and father, and quickly understands who was lost. He decides to say, and leaves a note for them that he gets it. 

Jagger and Archie continue to see each other over the years, and there's several missed connections and missed chances, when either one of them wasn't ready to move forward. Then one day he sees her running down the street after a teen and he jumps in the fray to lend a hand. This is the point where they really connect. 

Their relationship develops quickly, and yet, he's holding something back. As the two start their journey together, there's flashbacks to both parents, interactions with their two sets of families, and discoveries that in the end, are more meaningful than anything I've ever seen in a KA book. This one was well written, has little angst, and has multiple connections to Chaos. This is probably one of my favorite novellas related to Chaos, and I'm hoping that the expansion of stories, including that of Archie's brother are included in future books.

“You wanna know what I think?” Hound asked.
Jagger tipped his head back to look at his dad.
Then Hound told him what he thought.
“I think you’re in. And I think if you walk away from this girl, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. And I think I’m here to tell you that because you need another voice sayin’ something you already know.”
“That’s what I think too,” Jagger admitted.
Hound nodded, and again he did it only once.
“Then I’ll look forward to havin’ her over to dinner and celebrating with your mom that she can finally stop worrying about you because she’s feelin’ you shoulda been done sowin’ those oats about five years ago.”
Jagger grinned at him.
His mother had never been at one with the way Jag tackled life, considering he’d always been about wresting as much of it as he could for his own.
Dutch was the quiet, responsible one.
Jag was…
Not.
Hound reached out and caught Jag by the neck, gave him a squeeze, a shove, then let him go.
And Jagger felt better.
“So, what’s her name?” Hound asked.
“Archie.”
Hound looked him right in the eye.
Then he burst out laughing.
He settled back into the bar, his fingers cradling his brew, and he was shaking his head.
“Archie and Georgie. Fuck,” Hound said.
Jag hadn’t thought of that, both him and Dutch finding girls with boys’ names.
He grinned, leaned back into the bar himself, and replied, “She doesn’t have red hair and freckles, and I seriously doubt her best friend’s name is Jughead, but I think she might have a bit of tomboy in her.”
“Well, son,” Hound picked up his beer and tipped it toward Jag, “you’re about to find out.”
Jag grabbed his beer and tapped necks with Hound.
And he was grinning again.
Because Hound was right.
He was.

My Review

Blake has been enamored with Rebecca for a while, and when he finally gets the chance to cheer her up, he takes advantage and the two go off on an adventure while ditching school. The next day however, he ignores her, and continues to do so for two years. She's upset, as she thought they had a connection and can't understand why he's ghosting her.

Fast forward to now, and she's an OB nurse, and runs into him while visiting a patient. The two reconnect and he tries to repair their relationship, she's still wary, and the rest of her siblings are along for the ride.

I really enjoyed this one and the sensitivity and vulnerability of Blake, as well as the strength of Rebecca. Beyond that -- it's set in Berkeley and the story took me along the trip down my own memory lane, revisiting my favorite spots in the area. Unlike many novels that set up a story in a city this was completely accurate! From the coffee to pizza, the hillside hikes. For me, it added to the story and made me want more. Looking forward to this series!

My Review

Luna is an expert crafter. When she has the opportunity to join a reality tv show to create a DIY wedding, she enters her brother and his fiance in the show to help them win the contest and gain an upgraded New York apartment as the top prize.

When Luna shows up, she encounters Alec, who believes that she's an assistant and demands she find him coffee. He's a divorce lawyer who is there to try and repair his relationship with his brother who is also a contestant on the show.

Luna and Alec run into each other at the local diner and trade insults, he continues to make her life hell and she's making him equally as frustrated. In desperation, he searches for Luna on social media to get ideas for his brother to help improve their performance on the next DIY challenge, and she ends up discovering that her new follower is Alec. Feeling sorry for him, she offers to help him.

This is a true enemies to lovers story with the typical hilarity you would expect from Meghan Quinn. It also includes the added family relationships and outrageous side characters she's known for. Enjoyed this one and hoping that luna's roommate gets her own story soon!

My Review: 

 With many books, there’s a point in the story where I start to think “Uh-oh. This isn’t going to end well.” That moment came early, when Haley, a crafter and barista runs into her sister’s ex-boyfriend while trying to investigate where the new coffee roasters are in town. Haley has always had a crush on Beck, and when he realizes who she is, he lashes out since he’s still holding on to the toxicity from his past relationship with Jess. When he pushes her too far and causes her to cry, he feels like a jerk (rightly so) and goes to check on her where the dynamic between the two changes.

As these two hook up, the guilt, and the complexity of starting this relationship hits hard. The hooking up with the sibling’s ex is always a difficult topic, but throw in the sister that isn’t just vain, but is struggling with mental health issues and you’ve created a storm ready to burst. Surprisingly, Sarah Mayberry pulls this off well, and treats the situation with care and accuracy. While I haven’t read the prior books from the Vermont series, I may need to go back as this new-to-me author is one that creates a visual story and characters with depth and chemistry that should not be missed.
