Title: Faking It
Author: J.D. Hollyfield
Fake it
till you make it.
That’s Lexi Hall, the wild socialite’s motto for how to live life.
Single and allergic to commitment, Lexi is having the time of her life. Or is she? With a new promotion at the art gallery, and her colorful lifestyle as bright as ever, she swears she has no interest in slowing down. When Lexi receives a phone call that can change her career, she pounces on the opportunity. But what this outgoing diva doesn’t plan for is her new client, the closed off, secluded artist, Hunter James. Fighting to draw the line between work and pleasure, it’s up to Lexi to figure out how to balance her fake life for something real.
Hunter
James is an artist without a muse. Lacking the beauty in his life that he
craves, his art is beginning to suffer. Unfortunately for the mysterious
artist, a past mistake also tarnishes his trust in women. Forced to take a
meeting with an art gallery dealer, he accepts knowing he’ll turn her down. He
turns them all down. But what he doesn’t anticipate is for the seductive
bombshell to turn his world upside down. As his body and mind come alive,
he vows to stop at nothing to have her on his canvas and in his bed.
As Lexi’s
life begins to brighten with the promise of something beautiful, can she stop
faking it and find a reason to make it real? Or will Hunter’s past replace
their light with darkness?
My Review
Her newest release “Faking
It” is about Lexi Hall, who was briefly introduced in Hollyfield’s prior novel
“My So Called Life.” Lexi is in her mid-twenties, and has just become the lead art
dealer at a trendy gallery in San Francisco. She’s living the single life –
dating, drinking, and dancing. She’s model gorgeous, wears expensive clothes,
and knows how to carry herself. Except, she is a giant fakey faker! While she
appears to life the diva lifestyle, what she really wants is to find a man who
sees past the image she presents, sweeps her off her feet, settles down, and
starts a family. She’s a bit envious of the life her friend Chrissy has, but
won’t dare say that out loud.
“I slapped a fake smile on my fake face,
because that what I do. I fake shit.. I fake being happy. I fake loving
life, and I fake not being heartbroken. Today would be no different than any
other day in the life of Lexi goddamn Hall.”
When Chrissy calls
with an opportunity to land an elusive artist, Lexi must head to Los Angeles to
close the deal. She arrives in L.A. vowing to turn over a new leaf, and become
a new woman. No more diva one-night hookups for her! She wants someone to want
her for her, and not her looks. She’s slightly drunk and pissy and when a man
at a bar tries to buy her a drink, she’s livid! She’s not about to let Mr. Sexy
get to this “New Leaf Lexi.” She tries to refuse him, drunkenly blurts out that
he should come back to her room with her, takes it back, then when trying to
pay for her own drink proceeds to dump out the contents of her purse (including
her “toys”), he insults her, she insults him, then slaps him before storming
off. The next morning, she goes to meet with Mr. Artist, and yup. You guessed
it. Bar dude.
Hunter James is an
artist whose life is stuck in rut (see what I did there?). He’s reclusive,
moody, and closed off to not only the outside world, but anyone that tries to
get close to him. He needs a muse, and finds one in Lexi. They both are
intrigued with each other. He makes her
an offer, she becomes his model, but things get messy. He has secrets, past
woman drama, and his issues come smacking them both in the face.
The two have fun
together, and yet, she’s hesitant to fully give in. Emotionally, he’s hot and
cold with her, and she can’t figure out what to do about it. Then, there’s
other issues:
“Lexi?”
“Yes, Hunter”
“What the hell is Goonies?”
He didn’t. At that I gasp. (note: I did
too!)
“You didn’t just ask me that”
She is hoping for a
future with the first man does more to her than make her things zing, and she’s
afraid to take a chance. He’s messed up from his past, and can’t figure out how
to do the whole relationship thing. Lexi took a while to warm up to – same as
with Chrissy. She seemed a bit too fake. But then, that’s the point, right?
Didn’t take long for the girl to grow on me. She’s got spunk. And she can take
care of herself!
The author takes you
on an emotional ride and there were a few moments in this one that I felt right
in the gut! Add this one to your reading list, and while you’re at it, grab the
others in the series that led to this one: Life Next Door, Life in a Rut, and
My So Called Life. Each can be read as stand-alones, as can this one, but I
think you’ll enjoy the relationship between Lexi and Chrissy more if you read
My So Called Life. Plus, you’ll get the “Pamcakes” reference J
