My Review

Lovebug was an enjoyable read! Mabel is a science gal - works at the arboretum and has been dating her BF for years. She's always been the nice girl, and the one who sacrifices herself for others.

While she's pressured to help expand her fiance and his mom's business ventures, she invites Wallace "The Wall" to attend an information session. Wall is introduced as a groundskeeper but he ends up being much more. While attending, he calls out everyone and exposes the "business venture" as a pyramid scheme, and the resulting fallout causes Mabel's relationship to end.

Mabel begins to not only discover her own voice, but the truth about Wallace and her family history. While teased early on, you don't really get the information about her aunt until the very end. The story was well written, but at times I felt overwhelmed with the long conversations and emphasis on comparing mating rituals of entomology. If you can get past that, it's a good read.
 

Excerpt

I check to make sure all kids and counselors are settled safely and the craft is underway, then start a slow walk to where the man is crouched down and working with a wrench.

I have absolutely no idea why I choose this approach, but I whip around the water fountain in a sort of sneak attack, and shout, “Hi!”

His body jerks as though I’ve startled him. Because clearly, I have. I smile and wave. Even though he’s right in front of me.

He turns and looks behind us as if he’s unsure I’m actually speaking to him. I’m noticing this happens a lot when I greet people. Calliope told me once that I approach strangers with “unearned familiarity,” and it freaks them out. Friendliness freaks people out? I’m not sure what to do with that information.

“Yes you, silly!” I say.

His full attention is trained on me, but he doesn’t say a word. I’m starting to think the kids were right, and this guy actually doesn’t speak.

“Hey you,” I breathe.

Was that my voice I just heard? I don’t say “hey you” in that shouty way people do when they’re trying to get your attention outside the grocery store for leaving your cart abandoned in the lot instead of in the assigned cart area—not that I would ever shout at someone or leave a cart abandoned in a lot. No, the “hey you” I give him is that breathy sort. That shy, smiley sort. The kind of “hey you” people say when they know you so deeply and truly that they almost never say your actual name because they don’t need to. Who else could they possibly be speaking to at that moment except... you. You. You. Wonderful, precious, irreplaceable you. Not that I’ve ever been the recipient of such a “you.”

“Did you need something?” he asks.

He speaks! Oh wow, he speaks!

His voice is... gruff. That’s the only way to describe it. Is he annoyed? Nah, it’s probably just his voice. I’ve heard of perpetual bitch face. Maybe he has a perpetual bitch voice? But he’s a guy, so I guess to be accurate, it would be called a perpetual bastard voice?

“Before we begin, let it be known that I don’t think you’re a bastard. Or a bitch.”

“Excuse me?”

“I was just thinking that you sound like a bastard, but I bet that’s just the way your vocal cords operate. They’re probably just prone to a gruff, bastardy tone.”

“No. You had it right the first time. I am a bastard.”

“Gotcha! So. How are you? Your name is ‘The Wall’? I mean, they call you ‘The Wall’? What is that short for? Walter? Walton? Wallmeranian?” I rattle off some suggestions.
“Wallace,” he huffs.

“Gotcha. Big fan of Wallace and Grommit?” I ask.

“No.”

“Gotcha. Can I call you Wally?” “No.”

“Gotcha. Hey, do you think I say gotcha too much?”

“Yes,” he says definitively.

“Gotcha. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll work on that. Hey, wanna hear something silly?”

“No.”

“Cool, here I go. My kids... not my biological kids—though I do hope to have some of those one day, how about you? Sorry, don’t answer that. That’s an invasive question. See those teenagers over there who are completely unrelated to me?” I point in April and Dante’s direction where they are decidedly not focused on their kids and are instead “hiding” behind a pavilion post watching my flailing interaction. I wave to them. “Hey, guys!” They ignore me and look off in random directions as if they’re suddenly fascinated by all the glorious nature around them. “I’m training them as CITs this summer. That’s right, I’m chief of staff this year! I mean head counselor. And well, the thing is, they’re... well... they’re afraid of you.”

Silence.

He goes back to working on the fountain as if he’s giving up on his conversation with me.

“Isn’t that ridiculous?” I start giggling uncontrollably. “Fine by me,” he says.

“What’s fine by you?”

“That they’re afraid of me.”

“Oh.” I feel my head jerk back. “Really? But if they’re afraid of you, they’ll keep avoiding you and making up stories about you instead of taking the time to really get to know you.”

“Perfect. Love that plan,” he says and swipes some sweat off his brow.

“Oh.”

I’m not sure how to respond to this man.

“Besides,” he continues, “you’re afraid of me too.”

My Review: 

Enzo needs to find a wife, and find one quickly. He’s not able to inherit his family business unless he’s married. After a failed “attempt” at becoming engaged, he runs into Bianca.   The two start talking and he shares his desperation about needing a wife. She has an idea that will help them both. She will be his wife, as long as he provides the “sample” that she needs to become a mother.  

The two enter a contract to have this fake marriage so that they can each get what they want. Things become complicated when they both start to break the terms of the contract by sleeping together, and developing feelings for each other.

This was a super fun read, and has more emotion and depth while maintaining the humor and snark between Enzo and Bianca. The inclusion of the infertility and difficulties that come along with not being able to conceive. The bonus of recipes at the end was a nice touch, and makes the story one where you can literally take something from this book.

“So how’s your ego tonight? A little bruised, huh?”

“It’s fine,” I said, tightening the knot in my tie. “Reina obviously wasn’t the right choice for a wife. I’m glad she said no.”

Bianca started to choke on her olive. “Wait a minute.” She fanned her face and managed to swallow. “You proposed to—to—what was the little girl’s name?”

“Reina. And you’ve got no room to call someone little, Tiny.”

As I’d hoped, the old nickname drew a brief scowl from her. “We’re talking about you right now. Did you actually propose tonight? Like with a ring?” 

I exhaled, regretting I’d mentioned it. “Yeah. I did.”

Her eyes lit up. “Let me see it.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because you just want to rub salt in my wound.”

“For fuck’s sake, Enzo. You’re not wounded. You don’t even love this girl, you just needed to put a ring on her finger so your dad would put your name on the company letterhead.” She held out her hand. “Now give it here.”

Something told me I was going to be sorry, but I reached into my jacket and pulled out the ring box. 

She took it from me and opened it up. “It’s pretty,” she said with grudging admiration. Then she squinted at it, pushing her glasses up her nose. “Did you have it engraved?”

I picked up my bourbon and took a hefty swallow. “No.”

“But it says  .  .  .” She set the box down and pulled the ring from the velvet to examine it closer. Then she started laughing. “‘Love Always, Ricky?’”

“Give me that.” Leaning forward, I tried to swipe the ring from her hand, but she held it out of my reach. 

“Just a second! I want to try it on.”

I thumped against the back of the booth, picking up my drink again and tossing back the rest of it. Could this night get any worse? 

Bianca slipped the ring on her finger—it fit—and held out her hand, studying it. “So what did you say?”

“I proposed.”

“But how? Like, did you say, ‘You’re the love of my life and I want to be with you forever’ kind of thing?

”“Uh, not exactly. I didn’t want to lie to her. I just, you know, gave her the ring.” I made a grand, sweeping gesture with one hand. 

“But you must have said something.”

“What difference does it make?” I asked irritably. 

“Look, I’m only trying to help you. You obviously blew it tonight, and by your own admission, you need to find a Lucy for your Ricky sooner rather than later, right?” 

I looked around for Lara. I needed another drink. And then a ride home. 

“Right?” Bianca prodded me with her foot under the table again. “So let me help you.”

“The only way you could help me is to marry me,” I grumbled, waving Lara over. “And since that’s out of the question, this discussion is over.”

“Well, wait a minute. Who said it’s out of the question?”

I stared at her like she’d sprouted horns. “Huh?”

Bianca continued to study the ring on her finger. “I’m just thinking out loud here. But it seems to me we each have a goal, and they could both be accomplished with one simple—fake—relationship.”

I shook my head, as if to clear it, but the fog remained. “I know I’m drunk, but what the hell are you talking about?”

She sighed and picked up her martini for a sip. “I’m talking about the fact that you need a wife to get what you want. I’m willing to be that wife—temporarily, and under the strictest of conditions—if you’ll agree to give me what I want.”

I shook my head. “Oh, no. No fucking way. I see what you’re doing here. I’m not paying you to fake being my wife.”

Bianca rolled her eyes. “Give me a break, Enzo. I don’t want your money. Nor do I need it.”

“Then I don’t understand, ”I said, feeling—once again—completely baffled by a woman. “What could you possibly want that I could give you?”

The smile that crept over those hellfire lips should have been a warning. “A baby.”

My Review

The Buchanan curse strikes again, and causes jaw dropping reactions when Grady discovers who has caught his eye, and same thing happens when Gray's his sister Grace and her instant and forever love Tucker discover the truth.

If you've been reading this series, you know about the "curse" and that his sisters encounter caused the much needed ending to Tucker and Magnolia's relationship. Magnolia is working for father, and when he buts into a situation and fires a subordinate, Magnolia decides she's had enough. She applies for a position managing Gray's new business venture. Grady thinks he's hiring Lia, but when he discovers her true identity, he's crushed.

Torn between his true love, his sister, and the havoc caused by his heart going to Magnolia causes him to make all the wrong choices.

As with all the others in this series, the couple works their way through the drama and finds their happily ever after.

This one also gives you a peek into the next one that features the elusive Hunter, who didn't marry his "one" and is now coming back after getting divorced.

"This is Grady."

There was silence on the other end. I pulled the phone away from my face to make sure I'd answered.

"Hello?" I said.

I heard a deep breath before she spoke. "Hi, I'm here, sorry."

My head tilted to the side when I heard her voice. It was soft and low with the curling accent that I'd gotten used to in the past month and a half. But it ... I shook my head ... something about it made the hairs lift slightly on my arms.

"Did you mean to call my number?" I asked carefully.

Inexplicably, I found myself holding my breath waiting for her to answer.

"I heard you're looking for help. Administrative help," she clarified.

My head went back. "Did you?"

She was quiet for a second. "Small town," she explained. "People talk."

I laughed under my breath. "So I'm learning."

It made me shake my head. The darknet had nothing on the Green Valley information pipeline. "So," I continued, "tell me a little bit about yourself."

"Of course." For the second time since I picked up, she let out an audible breath. "I have my BS in Business Administration, an MBA from Vanderbilt, and other than college, I've lived in Green Valley my whole life."

Scratching the side of my face, I glanced around at the horrific state of the office and tried to imagine someone with an MBA wanting anything to do with it. My face was bent in a grimace

"I've spent the past five years as an office administrator for my ..." She paused. "For a local business, and I'm looking to change things up. Fresh start."

I sat up slowly. "I can understand wanting a fresh start. That's why I'm here."

"I know. I, umm, I heard that. In town." She stumbled slightly over her words, and I smiled. "I'm not very outdoorsy, and I know that's what you'll be doing, but I'm the most organized person you'll ever meet. My label maker is my favorite accessory, and I have lists for my to-do lists. And I know every single business owner from here to Maryville."

I laughed. "You sound like you're already in your interview."

She laughed too, and I grimaced when my chest tightened. It caused a strong enough physical sensation that I glanced down at my body, like it was separate from me somehow.

"I can come in and fill out an application, if you'd like," she said.

I laughed under my breath. "If I had applications, I'd say yes." I glanced around the mess surrounding me. "But ... I'm not quite that prepared yet."

"That's also why you need someone who knows how to get an office up and running."

"That's true," I agreed. "Can you come in tomorrow so we can talk a little bit more? Since I don't have an application."

"That would be great," she said firmly. The stumbling was gone. I found myself wondering how old she was. What she looked like.

If I had a calendar, I would've glanced at it. But that was also buried in a stack of papers.

"How does nine sound? Do you need the address?"

"Sounds perfect," she answered. "And uh, no, thank you. I know where to find you."

I shook my head.

"Small town," we said in unison. She laughed, and my smile took up my whole damn face.

"Then I'll see you at nine tomorrow ..." My voice trailed off. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. I'm still working on my Southern manners."

She laughed. My chest did that thing again. It wasn't the heavy press of panic. It was a lightening. A lifting of whatever pressure I'd been feeling before she called.

She spoke slowly, like she was thinking carefully about her answer. "You can call me Lia."

 My Review: 

I absolutely loved this book - Dr. Lauren is hilarious, and Garrett is the swoony hero that will make you cheer for him.

Their meeting is unconventional, their relationship hidden from her father/his boss, and yet, these two make it work. As you would expect from the dynamic duo of Max Monroe, the characters have great personalities, there's a ton of hilarity, and since readers were introduced to Garrett in another book, you get the added bonus of Jake, Holley, and Chloe. Throw in Garret's kids in the story, add a fish named fat Frank, and this is one that you don't want to miss.

Suddenly, the door to Garrett’s room cracks open, and he peeks his head out, damn near startling me into another dimension.

 Noticing my hysterical jump and defensive pose, he quiets his voice to a whisper. “Sorry to, um, startle you. I just… I’m ready.”

“Of course. Yeah.” I nod feverishly, follow him into the room, and take a few discreet, calming breaths to slow down the rate at which my heart is sprinting inside my chest. Honestly, for a woman who did gymnastics in her childhood, you’d think my cardiovascular system would be able to tolerate adrenaline a little better than this. A minor startle from a hot fireman and I’m panting like a dog in heat.

 His gown covers everything, but it’s strangely anticipatory and it feels like I’m seeing more of him than I should. It’s weird and odd and completely irrational. So, I shut my eyes for a brief moment and force myself into doctor mode.

           “Just take a seat on the exam table, please,” I instruct him with a gesture of my hand.

 He does without question.

Then I start my assessment.           

First, his vital signs. Blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature.

All good. All within normal limits.

Next, with my stethoscope, I listen to his heart and lungs and abdomen.

Also, good. Steady, strong, clear.            

“Am I going to live to see another day, Dr. Lauren?” he asks once I finish a quick reflex check, smirking up at me from his spot on the exam table, and I can’t not return his expression with a grin.

“Yes, it appears that you will,” I answer and make a few notes in his chart. “Now, if you don’t mind, please stand up in front of the exam table so I can…uh…check…your…uh…testicles.”

Okay, Lauren. Be cool. Be. Cool. It’s just another day at the office, and Garrett is just another set of anatomy...

 My Review: 

Oh Dirk…you jerk. You found a way to change my mind about you and your womanizing ways. Dirk has been in every book in this series, so it’s not a “new” character. What is new is his story, and his version of events as he tries to navigate his way back to Merit, the girl who was his best friend. The one who she trusted for her first time. And the one that he called another name while they were together.
Merit is back to take over her family’s farm, and has returned from NYC to stay. She’s invested in keeping her family business alive, and trying to protect herself and her heart from Dirk. 

 

Things don’t go as planned as she takes what she wants from him one night, but ends up with a lasting connection. The two must navigate through all the hurt, pain, and drama that comes as a result of miscommunication and mistaken choices. 

This series is a good one, if you can overlook the issues of unprotected sex and unplanned pregnancies that result from the character’s actions, as happens in this, and others in this series. Then again, these characters are grown adults, and make adult decisions and must navigate through their choices.

 

 This one, like the others, has ties to the rest of the Shaw family and their women. I’d say this is probably the best one in the series, but that’s likely due to the redemption of Dirk.
