My Review

Hattie is alone, and is leery of being let down again by others. She's taking care of her abusive father, and is just trying to save her heart.

Axl is a former military guy (of course), and is determined to win her heart. When he discovers what's really behind her resistance about getting involved, he vows to find a way in.

The two deal with everything from strange phone calls, strained relationships with their parents, and their own troubling past. Alx lets his inner badass come out both with Hattie's father, and his mission to make Hattie his. She uses her heart to help him heal, and the two of them find a way through.

Bad cop drama continues here, has a bit more insight but not really a conclusion, so I'm excited to see how this is going to be wrapped up in the last book.

“Yo, Axe,” Hawk greeted.

“You got a minute?”

In answer, Hawk tipped his head to the chair opposite his desk and tossed his phone on the top of it.

Since Hawk rarely sat, the men who visited him didn’t either.

But for this, Axl closed the door behind him after he entered, moved to a chair, and put his ass in it.

Hawk watched this, and he hesitated, but then he joined him, sitting behind his desk.

“Is everything cool?” Hawk asked.

“I got a sitch. Personal. And I was hoping you might talk it through with me. Maybe have some insight.”

“Hit me,” Hawk invited.

And there was one of the bennies of working for Cabe “Hawk” Delgado.

He was a good boss, generous with his knowledge, gave credit where it was due, didn’t get in your face if you fucked up and held up your hand that you did…

And he had time for you even when he didn’t.

“I met Hattie’s dad last night.”

Hawk’s lips thinned.

Right.

His boss might not be in on their chats, but not much happened with his crew that Hawk didn’t know about.

So he knew about Don Yates.

“I got blindsided,” Axl told him.

“How?” Hawk asked.

“He loves her, Hawk.”

Hawk held his gaze a beat before he sat back in his chair.

Yeah.

This was going to be a conversation.

Hawk’s voice was lower when he inquired, “He loves her, and he hits her?”

Axl shook his head. “I got no excuse for that. Or the verbal abuse he keeps doling out. What I know is, recently, he called her a whore.”

“Jesus,” Hawk clipped.

“She didn’t tell me that. She told Ryn, Ryn told Boone. And I got it from Boone. But before…” He paused, then got to it, “I can’t step in with her dad. She knows their relationship is dysfunctional. She feels beholden. I could only have her back. Until I heard that. Then I shared I was going to have to have words with her father.”

“Good,” Hawk murmured.

“Then I got there, and the man was practically beaming, he was so fuckin’ happy Hattie brought her boyfriend over to meet him.”

“Fuck,” Hawk grunted.

“So we sat down. He gave me the ‘What do you do for a living’ and ‘How’d you meet my daughter’ gig. I answered. All was good. Then I told him I couldn’t have him upsetting Hattie like he did by calling her a whore. He tried to explain it by saying he was in a bad mood. I told him, in future, if he was in a bad mood, he needed not to take that out on Hattie.”

“On your first meeting,” Hawk noted.

“On our first meeting,” Axl confirmed.

“Which happened…what? How long have you been seeing her? A few days?”

“Yep.”

“You laid down the law with your woman’s father the first time you met him after you’ve been with her a few days,” Hawk laid it out.

“Yep.”

“Christ, Axe, you don’t fuck around,” Hawk muttered.

My Review

The latest release by Sarah Ready is a stand alone, and is exactly what made her one of my favorite authors.

Chloe is trying to find her soul mate, and her Aunt has a knack for matching people with their perfect person. When her aunt reveals that Chloe's soul mate is her first kiss, she goes off on an adventure to find the boy who she believes is her summer camp love. Joining her is her childhood frenemie Nick. He loves to antagonize her, but really, he just loves her. Off they go on a cross-country adventure searching for the 1 of the 7 men with the same name and age as her childhood crush. Hi-jinks, explosions, and hilarity are all had. Aunt Erma really knew what she was doing in the end!

“I’m just asking,” I say, “are you sure you want to bet your future on a myth?” Because, to be honest, something inside me wishes she’d get up and say, screw you, fate, I’m taking my future in my own hands.
“Would I bet my future?” she asks.
I nod and lean forward to hear her answer.
Slowly, she says, “I’d bet everything.”
Her words ring in my ears. She’s serious. She’ll do anything to get with this random guy she hasn’t seen in nearly twenty years. It’s like a cosmic joke, except I’m not laughing. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less.
“It’s a myth,” I say. “It’s not real.”
“It is,” she says. She points her finger at me and jabs me in the chest. “And I’m going to prove it to you.” Her hand rests over my heart. We both look down at her touching me. She yanks it back and wipes her hand on her napkin.
No man likes to see a woman wipe herself off after touching him. I scowl and then take her unspoken challenge. “More likely, by the end of this week, I’ll prove that soul mates don’t exist.”
“Good luck, you have hundreds of Aunt Erma’s successes against you.”
No worries, I stand by my belief that the whole town of Romeo is suffering from romantic delusions. Hey, the tourism dollars depend on it.
Also, I’d like to push a little bit of reality into this situation and throw out the idea that this guy might not be decent.
“He could be a rapist,” I say. That gets her attention. Her head snaps up and she glares at me.
“Or a Lothario,” she says. Take that, her eyes say. She bares her teeth at me in a semblance of a grin and I smile back. Game on.
The minstrel who had wandered close again hightails it to the other side of the restaurant.
“He could be a drug dealer,” I say.
“Or a pharmacist,” she says.
“He could be an alcoholic.”
“A vintner.”
“He’s unemployed,” I say.
“Independently wealthy.”
“He looks like a frog.”
“He’s a prince,” she says.
“He’s boring.”
“Strong and silent.”
I glare at her and she glares back, a smile curving on her lips.
“Bad in bed,” I say.
“A sex god.” She bites at her lower lip and I have the urge to take it in my mouth and show her a decade of pent-up wanting. I yank my thoughts from her lips and drop my ace in the hole.
“He could be an ax murderer,” I say. Take that and chew on it.
She laughs, throaty and low, and her eyes light up. The candlelight sparks off her glowing skin.
“Or,” she says, “he’s a lumberjack. Mmmm. Sexy ax. I’ll hold the handle. Rawr.” She claws her hand and scratches at the air.
I shake my head. “You got it.” I hold up my goblet of mead for a toast. “To Matt Smith. Chloe’s lumberjack soul mate.”

My Review

Cranky hero - check.
Adorable daughter - check.
City girl in the country - check.
Meddling parents - check.

This one has similar characters to the Single Dad, where Rhett is a single father, former rodeo star who is now managing his family ranch while trying to raise his young daughter. When he shows off to his friends and rides a bronco, he lands off kilter and has to deal with a broken leg.

Dad steps in and calls his friend - one who manages a Seattle basketball team, and "borrows" their orthopedic doctor for home assistance with his son's rehab. Leah shows up thinking she's helping a teenage son. Leah quickly realizes she's been duped, Rhett has been managed by his parents, and spunky daughter Joey is enamored and attached to Leah.

This was a super fun read. I'm a sucker for the single-dad / young girl stories, and this one was typical of Max Monroe's hilarity.

Leah

   Gently, I rap my knuckles against the wood, and moments later, an adorable little blond-haired girl comes running down the hall and right toward me.

   She pushes the screen door open with one of her cowgirl boots and steps out until she can keep it open with just her hip. With pigtails and dimples and big blue eyes, she just might be the cutest kid I’ve ever see in my life.

   Is this Rhett Jameson’s little sister?

   “Who are you?” she asks, ignoring any sort of greeting and getting straight to the point.

   I grin. “My name is Leah. What’s your name?”

   “Joey,” she answers, her small hands moving with her words. “Well, Josephine, but everyone calls me Joey.”

   “That’s a very pretty name.”

   “And you’re a very pretty lady,” she says, and her eyes move up and down my body, taking in my hair and my face and my dress and my shoes. “Maybe the prettiest lady I’ve ever seen. Are you in movies?”

   “No, I’m not in movies,” I answer on a soft laugh. “But you know what’s funny?”

   “What?”

   “You’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen in my whole life.”

   She giggles, and then her eyes get big. “Wait…oh my goodness! Are you here to teach me how to braid my hair?” Her button nose crinkles up in the most adorable way. “My granny told me she’d teach me how to do it, but I think she can’t remember, and is that why you’re here? Because you know how to do it?” she asks, and her short legs bounce up and down ever so slightly.

   “Uh…” I pause, completely entranced by this sweet little human, but also utterly confused. “Actually, sweetie, I’m not here to teach you how to braid your hair. I’m here—”

   “Aw, shucks.” She swishes one fist from her right hip to her left hip, and her tiny mouth points down at the corners.

   Immediately, I feel like the worst human being alive, and it takes everything inside me not to step inside the house and ask her to get me a hairbrush.

   But I rein in the emotion and offer up something I hope will soften her disappointment.

   “How about this? Since I’m going to be here for the summer, I’ll make sure someday very soon, I teach you how to braid your hair.”

   “Yeah?” Her big blue eyes light up like the sun. “Ya promise?”

   “I promise.”

   Truthfully, I’m just assuming this young girl lives here on this ranch, but I have no idea.

   I don’t know if she’s Tex’s daughter or someone else’s daughter. I don’t really know much of anything. Haven’t known much of anything since I told Frank Kaminsky I’d take this job.

   But so far, feeling out of the loop appears to be par for the course.

   The girl steps out of the house on her tiny cowgirl boots and wraps her arms around my waist. “I’m so excited, Leah!”

   I’m shocked at first by her instant affection, but it doesn’t take long before I’m putty in her teeny hands.

   “Me too, Joey.” A tickled laugh emerges from my lungs, and I pat her head tenderly.

   Eventually, she steps back and puts one hand to her hip. “So, if you’s supposed to be here all summer but it’s not just for my hair, why are you here?”

   “I was just about to ask the same thing, Joey.” A deep, raspy voice fills my ears, and that’s when I realize someone else has joined our conversation at the door.

   My eyes move up, up, up past Joey and land on a pair of perfectly worn-in jeans, over a shirtless and firm set of abs and an even firmer chest, and they don’t stop until they meet aqua-blue eyes that are pointed directly at me.

   Holy shit.

   This rugged, fine-as-hell specimen standing right behind Joey isn’t just any man; he’s the manliest man I’ve ever laid eyes on. His body is stretched tight with the kinds of firm muscles that do not come from protein shakes and a gym membership to LA Fitness. No. These are real muscles, made from hard, sweaty work on a big-ass ranch like this.

My Review

The Ward sister's series concludes with Forbidden, and I think this is probably my favorite in the series!

This one focuses on Isabel, the sister with brick walls around her that few can break through. Aiden is a former MMA fighter and purchased the gym that Isabel works and and loves. His arrival causes her to stumble, stutter, and act completely different from her normal self. As you read, you discover why.

Aiden is a recent widower, and comes with his daredevil daughter Anya move to Washington from California to escape the reminders of what they've lost. The connection between Aiden and Isabel really comes through Anya, and this is a SLOW BURN novel.

Good news is that Karla isn't stepping away from the Wards completely. The back of the book shows the Ward family 2.0 will continue and I cannot wait!
